Latest images, audio and video from Burma about maltreatment towards the Rohingya

http://www.restlessbeings.org

The Rohingya are one of the most persecuted communities in the world, they are stateless and refused any recognition of citizenship from Burma and they are deprived of the simplest of rights. In recent weeks there has been unrest and violence which has seen many killed and many more homeless and forced from their villages.

Press Statement for Immediate Release

Press Statement for Immediate Release

Amidst the recent violence in Arakan in Burma, Restless Beings called a Press Conference to bring to light the human stories behind the relatively unheard and unseen Rohingya community.

The evening started with an introduction from the Restless Beings Co Founding Directors- Mabrur Ahmed and Rahima Begum about the Stateless Rohingya project which was launched in 2010 and the recent campaign to raise awareness in this state of emergency since last month.

Mabrur Ahmed spoke of the campaign so far in recent weeks, from protesting and lobbying the Bangladesh Government to open it’s borders to then petitioning the British Government with over 13,000 signatures from 130 countries worldwide. In recent weeks, the Restless Beings website has reached over 80,000 hits, meaning that the Rohingya name, through campaigning on social media is being heard, despite the mainstream media not giving them the coverage they deserve. It was then also announced that the next step is to be a silent protest coinciding with the performances of the Burmese athletes that are taking part in the Olympics- the world’s stage. There are also plans to form a coalition with other charities to ensure that aid consisting of food and medical supplies can get through to the most vulnerable in Arakan.

Restless Beings, through a network of sources in Burma has been able to attain exclusive footage from the ground, showing groups of Rohingya being escorted out of their village by state forces and numerous horrific attacks on local Rohingya. The footage shown at the press conference and made available to the media that attended seeks to show as merely an insight, the strife and unknown abuse the Rohingya face, and to also show the international media that it is possible to obtain such news and report without bias.

Members of the Rohingya community in London part of the Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK) Yasmine Ara and President Tun Khin were then invited to speak about their experiences. It also provided an upsetting insight into the struggles of the Rohingya long before the summer clashes. The evening provided to be an opportunity to speak to other Rohingya members of the audience. One Rohingya, whose family are still in Arakan spoke of the fear that they live in daily and the heart-breaking news of his 12 year old cousin being killed in the violence, whilst another Rohingya said that after fleeing Burma, they had to live hiding that they were Rohingyan, but in London, they are finally free to live and be known as a Rohingya.

As well as the media, some interested parties either keen to know more about the Rohingya or support the campaign took home DVD’s with all the footage screened and the media statement. They were all encouraged to share the footage and the stories of the Rohingya.

One attendee who had previously attended our Building Hope event last month where we spoke about the Rohingya, had said that before then he had ‘’never heard of the Rohingya and neither had his family or friends’’. Indeed, raising awareness of the Rohingya community is one of the biggest challenges. However, raising awareness is integral at this stage and everyone can act to ensure that the Rohingya and their struggles are known.

A plea was made to the media which was supported by over 46 other organisations to report on the stories of Arakan on an international scale in an unbiased manner. The mainstream media is starting to rise, but regardless we as individuals still have an obligation to continue to spread the news of the Rohingya struggles.

It is at such times, that the international media and world leaders are required to pressure leaders enacting such grave human rights abuses. This issue is not about politics, race or religion, it is purely about simple human rights, rights that the Rohingya have been denied decades before this summer.

It is our duty as humans to make the atrocities known, and to stand up for the oppressed.

Burma’s Fabrications Ahead of UN Rapporteur Quintana Visit

Tuesday, 31 July 2012

Burma’s Fabrications Ahead of UN Rapporteur Quintana Visit

Source from Rohingyablogger, 30 July 2012
“There are several hypocritical attempts ans steps taking by the government in Arakan to deceive the visiting UN Special Rapporteur, Mr. Tomas Ojea Quintana about the actual situation of Arakan and to cover up the crimescommitted against Rohingyas.
Attempt 1
The authority are forcing the leaders of Rohingyas in Maung Daw and Buthidaung to say to Mr. Quintana that they are in peaceful situation and government has only arrested those who involved in the violence.
Attempt 2
The authority are clearing all the blocks to show that people can move freely and forcing Rohingyas to re-open the remaining businesses.
Attempt 3
Until two days ago, Rohingyas were not allowed to do their lifeline cultivation of crop rice. Now, the NaSaKa in Maung Daw are forcing Rohingyas to start their cultivation and subsequently taking photographs of them.
Attempt 4
NaSaKa is behaving as if they are giving some food rations. The foods given to Rohingyas are taken back by NaSaKa after the completion of their photographic sessions.
Attempt 5
Authorities in Sittwe are repairing few remaining Mosques and painting them.
Attempt 6
Authorities and Rakhine leaders are visiting the Rohingya camps, persuading Rohingyas and calling them as if their brothers.
Attempt 7
The government also ordered all people to attached the postcards with the symbol “NSK” to their the shirts.” Rahim from Maung Daw reported.
In short, authorities in Arakan commanded all Rohingyas and Rakhines that they must, though externally, show solidarity and live like friends from 1st August to 5th August. This pseudo-solidarity and peacefully living together for five days is certainly an attempt to deceive the visiting UN Special Rapporteur, Mr. Tomas Ojea Quintana. C’mon, tyrannic regime and extremist Rakhines! Don’t be afraid to show your true faces. Don’t try to
deceive the world.
Moreover, according to one of the internal source, the police custodies in Maung Daw and Buthiduang have become Burmese Version of Nazi Extermination Camps where many Rohingyas arrested and locked up are being killed through tortures and various other means. The Rohingyas including under-aged ones are kept without water for days. When they are given foods, it is not on the plates but on the ground. Then, their hands are tied with ropes and they are forced to eat using their mouths. Besides, authorities of the custodies frequently put SALT into wounds of Rohingyas resulted from the tortures. Whoever dies is buried inhumanely wherever possible. Therefore, it is quite similar to how Jews were treated in Nazi’s extermination camps.
Furthermore, it has been known to the world that the monks in Rakhine state are restricting Rohingyas’ access to foods, rations and medication. The monks boycotted 22 Rohingyas villages in Kyauktaw township. No Rohingya from these 22 villages are allowed to go out of their villages in search of foods and making them (Rohingyas) die by starvation inside their villages. To add more horrors, according to a reliable source from Maung Daw, about 2 to 3 Rohingyas per day (including children) are being slaughtered in “Allu Daw Bray (Byay)” monastery opposite to the government hospital in Maung Daw. During the raids by the police and Lunthin (security guards) which are made up of Rakhines, hundreds of Rohingyas were arrested. Some of them were killed on the spot, some have been kept and being tortured in police custodies and some were handed over to the concerned monastery to be slaughtered. The people who are not allowed to inflict pains even on insects, whose religion teaches Metta (loving-kindness), are slaughtering human beings. Unbelievable! These people who are hiding behind saffron might not be Buddhists. They might be influenced more by Hitler than Buddha himself.
Meanwhile, arresting of educated Rohingyas and their religious leaders continues in Buthidaung and Maung Daw.
The people of the world regretted and mourned after the holocaust of six millions Jews. Then, they decided and took oath to not let happen such kind of atrocities, ethnic cleansing, genocides and the crimes against humanity take place on the earth again. Yet, it is taking place against Rohingyas in Arakan state of Burma. Do come forward to save them before it
is too late.

Rohingya Repressed for UN Visit – Aid being blocked and looted at Arakan ports

Rohingya Repressed for UN Visit – Aid being blocked and looted

Rohingya Project

The suffering in Arakan continues for the Muslim Rohingya, despite reports of UN rapporteur Tomas Ojea Quintana visiting Arakan today. What should spark hope in the darkness of the last few weeks, opens another sinister chapter to what will now inevitably be a silent killing field in the state.

Our sources have updated us with information that Northern Arakan has been made into a concentration camp where Rohingya are kept and cut off from all the other regions. Upon hearing of the UN visit, preparations are being made to ensure that the Rohingya are seen to be free, but in fact the control over them is just increasing, with further reports of police and state authority attacks against them. In areas where there are a great number of military personnel, the Rohingyas are given a little more freedom to move freely and are able to purchase some food goods, however at an extortionate price which of course is unaffordable.

Further, the Rohingya of south Buthidaung are still facing an acute food shortage. There are a few villages in the remote areas of the township with a sizeable Rohingya community living surrounded by a majority Rakhine population and are thus continuing to be controlled by them. Some Rohingya there have managed to make telephone calls to other townships seeking help to save them from imminent starvation and death due to the food blockages by the Rakhines and Monks alike.

Reports have been made of a muslim locality in Maungdaw, where the Rohingya were driven out by the local Rakhine thugs. Fifteen large houses with warehouses of food stock for sale belonging to well off Rohingya families were taken over by Rakhines and the whole area under their rule. The Rohingya owners were not given any time to collect personal items before being kicked out. The homes and warehouses were then looted, with hundreds of millions of Kyats worth of goods taken. Even now, there is no opportunity for these Rohingya families to return to the now empty shells, which were once their homes.

The Rohingya are further suppressed at this time into a state of silence, fearing that any anti state reports will lead them to an even more vulnerable situation. Win Myaing, a spokesperson for the Arakan State government when being asked about the report still refers to the recent events as just ‘civil rioting’ and ‘ethnic clashes’, showing a clear refusal to have any open dialogue to address the grave human rights abuses against the Rohingya.

On the 26th July a ship carrying food arrived in Akyab, but was looted and the local Rohingya were not able to reach any of the supplies. The items included 18,000 bags of rice (900 metric tonnes), 1,000 bags of lentils (50 metric tonnes) and 1,100 bales of clothing. As the Rohingya are restricted in the concentration camps far from the town entrance, any aid will always be intercepted before reaching them. The donors were mostly from Muslims from Yangon and other cities organised by the Myanmar islamic Council, Myanmar Ulema Headquarters, Myanmar Muslim Youth Organisation, Jamitul Ulema Organisation and Moon Sighting Committee, with the value of the goods being estimated at $500,000.

Restless Beings are currently working on leading a coalition of charities with the UN to ensure that a route for aid to be safely delivered to the most vulnerable does in fact reach the most vulnerable without being blocked. In situations of increased systematic attacks and violent restrictions on the Rohingya, aid and medical supplies are required immediately for survival.

News Update From Arakan State

01/08/2012

Myanmar Ethnic Rohingya Human Rights Organization Malaysia (MERHROM) is deeply concerns about the continued violence towards Rohingyas in Arakan State of Burma. Though the military junta has stated that the situation is better now but the information we received from back home are different.

Myanmar Ethnic Human Rights Organization Malaysia(MEHROM) appeal to the International community for the food, medicine and other aid for the affected Rohingyas. However the food and other aid must be delivered directly to the Vulnerable without being blocked. In situations of increased and systematic attacks and violent restrictions on the Rohingya, aid and medical supplies are required immediately for survival.

In Buthidaung Township,on the 30th July 2012 a Rohingya known as Amir Husin s/o Shuna Miya and onother person from the 7th quarters were taken away by the police personnel from the 4th quarters and were demanded randsom. Since the detainees could not raise the demanded exorbitant amount the next day, their death bodies were sent to their helpless families with no explanation as to what has caused their death. One of the victims’ genital were found to have suffered severe burnt. There were other people also reported to have been taken away and their fate is yet to be confirmed.

The UN special reporteur Mr.Tomas Ojea Quintana has visited the Akyab ( Sittwe) distric of Arakan. Since there is no english-speaking personnel were provided by the government for the envoy, two Muslim College students were called in to interprete for him. Immediately after the UN officer left, the local Rakhines  Buddhists with the help of the police have attacked college students and their life are at risk now as they are being surrounded in Sakki Para Village and the Debaing village. MEHROM has received the above information from our source on the ground in Arakan.

At present, situation in Arakan is very similar to a time bomb which may at any time explode as each and every Rohingya is  all over the state regardless of the confined to their village regardless of the locality. If the condition continues for another two or three weeks, the world and the ASEAN will witness the irreparable human tragedies as the death toll will be unimaginable. It will be too late for the world to act then unless an immediate and tangible solution is employed by the international Community.

Even though there was a ray hope that the UN special officer might have the chance to gather the real and reliable information on the ground, the incidence of the Rohingya students and the population are being inimidated clearly shows that the very important visit by the UN officer may not produce the expected level of result. The UN envoy could still have the liberty to exercise his discretion in  in asserting his scope of the visit. This is the hope and the request,to the UN envoy, from the MEHROM which continuously monitors the current development back home.

Since the mass media has the very important role to play at any level of the human life today, MEHROM is requesting to unreservedly continue to highlight the plight of these hopeless people of Arakan. As the Human rights defenders, it is our duty to strive for the maximum achievement of the satisfactory level of the human rights protection by the needy Rohingyas.Based on the restless efforts by us, people in Arakan are overwhelmingly cooperating with us in gathering and channeling the latest information to us and it is also hoped that the media and the international communities will not rest until the issue is finally resolved as we are all equal human beings.

God shall Bless and protect those who defend the right of their fellow human.

Thank You.

Yours Sincerely,

Zafar Ahmad bin Abdul Ghani

President
