Tortured for refusing to register as Bengalis
Burma Times Correspondent: February 16,2015
Police have brutally tortured six men who refused to be identified as Bengalis in the census.
On Tuesday, police called the six Rohingyas, all of them respected members of the community at Rajar Bil, Rathidaung.
When commanded to convince Rohingyas to register as Bengalis, they refused saying that such a step would lead to more persecution of the Muslim community in the future. Their refusal angered the police who arrested them and took them to the Kiang dong base.
Then the torture began where the men had their beards and faces burned. They were then taken to Rathidaung police station on Wednesday and tortured further.
The six men are Md Motlob (53), Md Salim (50), Maulavi Md Yusuf (47), Md Ali (40), Md Ataullah (35) and Imam Hossain (35).
Following intense torture, two of them – – Ataullah and Motlob agreed to be identified as Bengalis. They were released on Saturday.
The four others are still in jail.
