Rakhines settle on Muslim proeprty in Akyab
By Burma Times
Rakhine families have started setltling in the Muslim neighbourhoods of Nazir para and Jaila para in Akyab, according to our local correspondent.
They are settling on areas formerly inhabited by Muslim families who have fled since the riots of 2012.
Akyab was once a mixed neighbourhood where Rakhines had only a slim majority over their Muslim counterparts. Now that has changed as most Muslims have fled or are confined in refugee camps where they are prevented from going out.
The Akyab neighbourhoods were the scenes of a heroic defence by Muslim men and women against Rakhine mobs who were beaten back against all odds. Later the security forces mowed through the defenders with machine guns and the attackers murdered and raped many Muslims and burned their property. Since then Rakhines have been gradually taking over the land left behind.
The authorities have on record opposed the settlement of the Rakhines. However, the Rakhine committee to resettle on Muslim properties is fully backed by the government.
