Police assault man during census, refuse to register children
Tension in Maungdaw villages
By Burma Times
Police have heavily assaulted a man who protested the activities of immigration officials in Sidha para, Maungdaw, according to our local correspondent.
On Saturday, immigration officials refused to register the names of children in the census. When Md Yunus (25), s/o Abul protested to the immigration officials, the police accompanying them started beating him with rifle butts. They then kicked him mercilessly with their boots till he was unconscious.
Yunus was then taken to custody. Locals have unsuccessfully tried to secure his release.
As news of the incident spread, locals in nearby villages refused to come out and participate in the census. This angered the police who initiated a curfew like situation and the village streets are now deserted.
