969 activists take position on strategic hill passage in Maungdaw North
Burma Times Correspondent: September 14, 2015
Activists belonging to the 969 movement have taken over a strategic passage near Hanti para and Boli Bazar in Maungdaw North.
Many of those trying to reach Maungdaw town from the Rathedaung area have been robbed and sent back.
The first contact with the Buddhist nationalists lurking on the hill slopes were made by shepherd boys last Tuesday when they were assaulted and livestock seized. Since then some Rohingyas passing though the hill pass which is the main route from Rathedaung to Maungdaw have been beaten up and assaulted.
The 969 activists are calling out insults to anyone in the distance and threatening to clear Arakan from the ‘Kalars’ and Bengalis.
There are fears that Buddhist nationalists are mobilising ahead of the Muslim religious festival of Eid ul Adha which will take place later this month.
