Buthidaung — About 150 Myamar military and Border Guard Police (BGP) have conducted raids on the village of Maung Gyi Taung in Northern Buthidaung and assaulted the villagers today (Jan 4, 2017), reliable reports say.

At around 4:00 am, The military began raiding on the village locally known as ‘Shaab Bazaar’ on the pretext of searching the hidden weapons stolen from the BGP (Border Guard Police) Arsenal in Maungdaw on October 9, 2016.

It has been reported that some military personnel surrounded up the women along with children and the men in two separate places, while some other military were besieging the entire village from outside.

Reports emerged of the military molesting the village women and torturing the men. A father and his son were severely tortured under the allegation of feeding foods to the alleged militants in the region and are now said to be in critical conditions. They are:
1) Mr. Mohammed (father)
2) Mohammed Ullah (son)

The military further threatened the villagers that they would keep torturing the villagers and even kill people if required if the villagers do not return the stolen weapons.

When the military retreated, they arrested 8 innocent villagers and took them to unknown locations along with them (i.e. the military).

The raid and atrocities committed by the military and BGP in the village now are similar to what have been committed in Koetankauk village of Rathedaung Township and in Northern Maungdaw.

It is still uncertain why and how a village in the northern most Buthidaung has come under the assaults of the Myanmar military.
