Government to issue temporary work passes for illegals
Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi says the passes that can be renewed yearly, are limited to workers who already have employers.
PUTRAJAYA: The government will issue temporary work passes to illegal immigrants employed in the country, says Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Zahid, who is also home minister, said the Attorney-General’s Chambers had clarified that existing laws permitted illegal immigrants to work.
“The permission was given based on current needs and they can work in all sectors. But it is only for workers who have employers,” he said after chairing a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Foreign Workers and Illegal Immigrants here today.
Zahid said the passes or cards however required yearly renewal and that this could be done through the Immigration Department’s Foreign Workers Division.
The deputy prime minister said the number of social visit pass (temporary employment) holders in 2016 had declined by 12.6% to 1,866,369 from 2,135,035 in 2015.
He said although the decline of about 300,000 foreign workers had a significant impact on the export value of products produced in the country and had disrupted the service sector’s productivity, the government remained committed to reducing the intake of foreign workers in stages.
From 2020 to 2050, the government has targeted foreign workers to fill only 15% of the workforce in all sectors, he said.
