KUALA LUMPUR: The Rohingya community here have called on the government to initiate emergency support to assist them during the current Movement Control Order (MCO) to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Myanmar Ethnic Rohingya Human Rights Organisation Malaysia (MEHROM) president, Zafar Ahmad Abdul Ghani said the situation has taken a toll on most of them who have lost their source of income.

“The situation of Rohingya refugees is extremely vulnerable as most of us depend on daily wages to survive.

“Most Rohingya refugees just stay at home without any means to get money to feed their family.

“Most of them are struggling to survive now as we do not have any saving,” he said in a statement today.

Zafar said as of now, they did not receive any assistance for the affected Rohingya.

He said most Rohingya refugees here were struggling to pay their house rental and at the same time need food for their families.

“Most Rohingya have run out of food and cannot imagine how we are going to survive if the MCO continues,” he said.

He said as an emergency response, MEHROM had engaged with fellow Rohingya to assist their group until they manage to get some help.

“We encourage everyone to open their heart to help the affected refugees. We hope to get some help soon,” he said, adding that MEHROM was unable to provide any financial assistance as they were not funded.

“We appeal to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), private sectors, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), European Union, United Kingdom and the United States government to help the affected Rohingya refugees,” he added.

MERHROM continuously work for the rights protection of Rohingya refugees and asylum seekers particularly on the right to work, treatment and education as Malaysia is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention. Malaysian government allows refugees and asylum seekers to seek protection here but the delay in refugee determination process by the UNHCR put thousands of them at risk of arrest and detention. As a result many of them face long detention due to slow intervention by the UNHCR. MERHROM constantly intervene in the case of arrest and detention and take necessary actions for their release.

  1. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

MERHROM constantly engaging its community leaders and members in various program including meeting, workshop, rountable discussion, forum, conferences and talks to empower them with knowledge and experience especially on human rights, refugee rights, Malaysian laws, regulations and culture as well as health issues. MERHROM will continuously find a way to further empower the Rohingya Community in order to help our community.

  1. EDUCATION & TRAINING

Education and Training is a vital component for the development of Rohingya community. MERHROM had an Education Centre for few years but had to close down due to lack of Resources. At the moment MERHROM is in the process to re-establish MERHROM Education Centre. We welcome the support from anyone to help us to establish the centre and provide the best education for the Rohingya community.

Due to continuous MERHROM’s advocacy work together with local and international human rights organization and the foreign government particularly the United States government through the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian Government stop the deportation of refugees to the Thailand border in 2010. The decision of the Malaysian government to stop the deportation of refugees to Thailand border saves thousands of refugees from the human trafficking syndicate.

PRESS STATEMENT  COVID 19 EMERGENCY SUPPORTS FOR ROHINGYA IN MALAYSIA.

source by merhrom:#

25TH MARCH 2020

 Dear Chief Editors,

                                       PRESS STATEMENT

COVID 19 EMERGENCY SUPPORTS FOR ROHINGYA IN MALAYSIA.

Myanmar Ethnic Rohingya Human Rights Organization Malaysia (MERHROM) has received hundreds of request from Rohingya in Malaysia for the Emergency Support during Covid 19 pandemic. Many of them cannot go to work due to Movement Control Order (MCO) imposed by the Malaysian government to curb Covid 19.

We understand everyone have been affected by this pandemic. The situation of Rohingya refugees is extremely vulnerable as most of us depend on daily wages to survive. Many Rohingya refugees are struggling to survive now as we do not have any saving. Most Rohingya refugees just stay at home without any means to get money to feed their family.

While they are struggling to pay the house rental, they need to bring food for their families and milk for their children.  Most Rohingya has run out of food but we have another week to go. We are unsure if the government will extend the Movement Control Order. We cannot imagine how we are going to survive if the MCO continue.

MERHROM is not funded, therefore we cannot provide any financial assistance for the affected Rohingya refugees. We appeal to the UNHCR, private sectors, OIC, European Union, UK and the USA government to help the affected Rohingya refugees.

As an emergency response to the current critical situation, MERHROM has made an appeal to the fellow Rohingya to assist the most affected Rohingya until we manage to get some help. Yesterday, Mr. Harun Rasyid bin Md. Habi, MERHROM Vice President distributed some rice, oil, sugar and potatoes to some families in Taman Jujur, Seremban. However it was very limited.

As of now we do not receive any assistance for the affected Rohingya. We encourage everyone to open their heart to help the affected refugees. We hope to get some help soon. For those who wish to contribute please contact MERHROM State Leader as follows:

KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 — With 200 Rohingya refugees in the country believed to have attended the Tabligh Ijtima in Sri Petaling Mosque, the Myanmar Ethnic Rohingya Human Rights Organisation Malaysia (MERHROM) says it will collaborate with the Malaysian government to curb the spread Covid-19.

In a statement today, its president Zafar Ahmad Abdul Ghani said since the outbreak its organisation has been educating the Rohingya refugees through MERHROM State Committee about symptoms of Covid-19 and how to take precautions.

“MERHROM is continuously spreading awareness on precautions as well as persuading the Rohingya community to go for testing if they have symptoms.

“Our organisation will continue to monitor the community and will do the necessary referral if any, we encourage all refugees to contact UNHCR Hotline or MERHROM if they have any questions and we will continue to assist the Malaysian Government to curb Covid-19”, he said in the statement.

Zafar added that on behalf of MERHROM he would like to recommend the government to run mobile clinics to test those with symptoms including their families, as many are afraid to go out due to government order and fear of arrest. — Bernama
