Rohingya Project
The suffering in Arakan continues for the Muslim Rohingya, despite reports of UN rapporteur Tomas Ojea Quintana visiting Arakan today. What should spark hope in the darkness of the last few weeks, opens another sinister chapter to what will now inevitably be a silent killing field in the state.
Our sources have updated us with information that Northern Arakan has been made into a concentration camp where Rohingya are kept and cut off from all the other regions. Upon hearing of the UN visit, preparations are being made to ensure that the Rohingya are seen to be free, but in fact the control over them is just increasing, with further reports of police and state authority attacks against them. In areas where there are a great number of military personnel, the Rohingyas are given a little more freedom to move freely and are able to purchase some food goods, however at an extortionate price which of course is unaffordable.
Further, the Rohingya of south Buthidaung are still facing an acute food shortage. There are a few villages in the remote areas of the township with a sizeable Rohingya community living surrounded by a majority Rakhine population and are thus continuing to be controlled by them. Some Rohingya there have managed to make telephone calls to other townships seeking help to save them from imminent starvation and death due to the food blockages by the Rakhines and Monks alike.
Reports have been made of a muslim locality in Maungdaw, where the Rohingya were driven out by the local Rakhine thugs. Fifteen large houses with warehouses of food stock for sale belonging to well off Rohingya families were taken over by Rakhines and the whole area under their rule. The Rohingya owners were not given any time to collect personal items before being kicked out. The homes and warehouses were then looted, with hundreds of millions of Kyats worth of goods taken. Even now, there is no opportunity for these Rohingya families to return to the now empty shells, which were once their homes.
The Rohingya are further suppressed at this time into a state of silence, fearing that any anti state reports will lead them to an even more vulnerable situation. Win Myaing, a spokesperson for the Arakan State government when being asked about the report still refers to the recent events as just ‘civil rioting’ and ‘ethnic clashes’, showing a clear refusal to have any open dialogue to address the grave human rights abuses against the Rohingya.
On the 26th July a ship carrying food arrived in Akyab, but was looted and the local Rohingya were not able to reach any of the supplies. The items included 18,000 bags of rice (900 metric tonnes), 1,000 bags of lentils (50 metric tonnes) and 1,100 bales of clothing. As the Rohingya are restricted in the concentration camps far from the town entrance, any aid will always be intercepted before reaching them. The donors were mostly from Muslims from Yangon and other cities organised by the Myanmar islamic Council, Myanmar Ulema Headquarters, Myanmar Muslim Youth Organisation, Jamitul Ulema Organisation and Moon Sighting Committee, with the value of the goods being estimated at $500,000.
Restless Beings are currently working on leading a coalition of charities with the UN to ensure that a route for aid to be safely delivered to the most vulnerable does in fact reach the most vulnerable without being blocked. In situations of increased systematic attacks and violent restrictions on the Rohingya, aid and medical supplies are required immediately for survival.

News Update From Arakan State
The suffering in Arakan continues for the Muslim Rohingya, despite reports of UN rapporteur Tomas Ojea Quintana visiting Arakan today. What should spark hope in the darkness of the last few weeks, opens another sinister chapter to what will now inevitably be a silent killing field in the state.
Myanmar Ethnic Human Rights Organization Malaysia(MEHROM) appeal to the International community for the food, medicine and other aid for the affected Rohingyas. However the food and other aid must be delivered directly to the Vulnerable without being blocked. In situations of increased and systematic attacks and violent restrictions on the Rohingya, aid and medical supplies are required immediately for survival.
In Buthidaung Township,on the 30th July 2012 a Rohingya known as Amir Husin s/o Shuna Miya and onother person from the 7th quarters were taken away by the police personnel from the 4th quarters and were demanded randsom. Since the detainees could not raise the demanded exorbitant amount the next day, their death bodies were sent to their helpless families with no explanation as to what has caused their death. One of the victims’ genital were found to have suffered severe burnt. There were other people also reported to have been taken away and their fate is yet to be confirmed.
The UN special reporteur Mr.Tomas Ojea Quintana has visited the Akyab ( Sittwe) distric of Arakan. Since there is no english-speaking personnel were provided by the government for the envoy, two Muslim College students were called in to interprete for him. Immediately after the UN officer left, the local Rakhines Buddhists with the help of the police have attacked college students and their life are at risk now as they are being surrounded in Sakki Para Village and the Debaing village. MEHROM has received the above information from our source on the ground in Arakan.
At present, situation in Arakan is very similar to a time bomb which may at any time explode as each and every Rohingya is all over the state regardless of the confined to their village regardless of the locality. If the condition continues for another two or three weeks, the world and the ASEAN will witness the irreparable human tragedies as the death toll will be unimaginable. It will be too late for the world to act then unless an immediate and tangible solution is employed by the international Community.
Even though there was a ray hope that the UN special officer might have the chance to gather the real and reliable information on the ground, the incidence of the Rohingya students and the population are being inimidated clearly shows that the very important visit by the UN officer may not produce the expected level of result. The UN envoy could still have the liberty to exercise his discretion in in asserting his scope of the visit. This is the hope and the request,to the UN envoy, from the MEHROM which continuously monitors the current development back home.
Since the mass media has the very important role to play at any level of the human life today, MEHROM is requesting to unreservedly continue to highlight the plight of these hopeless people of Arakan. As the Human rights defenders, it is our duty to strive for the maximum achievement of the satisfactory level of the human rights protection by the needy Rohingyas.Based on the restless efforts by us, people in Arakan are overwhelmingly cooperating with us in gathering and channeling the latest information to us and it is also hoped that the media and the international communities will not rest until the issue is finally resolved as we are all equal human beings.
God shall Bless and protect those who defend the right of their fellow human.
Thank You.

The military junta has called many Rohingya Muslim Religious Leader and warning them not to speak out if they were question by the United Nations Special Rapporteur. On top of that the Religious Leader has been beaten by the junta and some of them has been arrested. From what I heard about 360 Religious Leaders who are mainly from Maungdaw, Buthidaung, Akyab, Rathidaung and Kyawtaw, were taken to the police stations and they were threaten if they speak out. Mr. Tomas must use his intelligence to access the real situation of Rohingyas in Arakan State as we could not speak out freely due to security reasons.
All Muslim religious school has been closed. The police and Rakhine buddhist told Rohingyas to flee the country if they want to stay alive. If we stay in Arakan we will die.
MERHROM welcome the help and support for Rohingyas in Arakan from Malaysia and all over the world. MERHROM URGENTLY calls the United Nations to send the Peace Keeping Mission to Arakan State Urgently to monitor and control the situation in Arakan State. The delay in their action will caused many more innocent Rohingyas to be murdered.

It will take years for us to heal from the pain loosing the loves one and to rebuild their live. The current situation become worse day by day as the violence towards Rohingyas has continue. On top of that people are dying due to lack of food, shelter and medication. Women and children are the most affected group besides men and elderly. The authority called all the Natala villagers , Rakhine community from Maungdaw north , Rakhine community from Maungdaw town and others area- Buthidaung and Rathedaung – to join at the Maungdaw State High school as a refugees, pretending who are not able to stay in their villages for fear of attack from Rohingya community, said an elder from Myoma Kyayoungdan village.
“The Rakhine before setup 7 refugee centers at monasteries , but now they again setting up new style in Maungdaw High school. It is just for showcase of refugee to show the UN Human Rights Special Rapporteur, Tomas Ojea Quintana who will visit soon.”
Mosques checking in Maungdaw
On the other hand, the security personnel are checking the Mosques of Myoma Kyayoungdan village where was not happen before. The villagers were not at the Mosques when the security checked the Mosques. The Rohingya community is fearing for blocking the all Mosques as it is checking Mosques now most of the villages, said a religious leader from Maungdaw.
“The authority is going to arrest the Rohingya religious leaders and students. So the religious leaders and students are hiding for fear of arrest. No one stay in the villages.”
Court staffs attack Rohingya community in Maungdaw
The court staffs have been throwing stones to the Rohingya community who went to see their love one (family members) at the hearing session , said a Rohingya who is the victim of the court.
“The court staffs also said that you are not allow to attend the courtroom. This is not your place.”
The judge also stated the case period into double and fine also double. The Rohingya community, who has a case with bail bound, are called by court and sent to the jail with double jail term and with fine.

“Some army is stationed near the market of Maungdaw and other areas, some Rohingya are going to market to buy foodstuff for their home when army has taken security in the town. The army also sells rice to the Rohingya since yesterday in Maungdaw.”
“The rice sacks which Rohingya buy from army, are taking to their home, but the police personnel are collecting toll from these rice sacks.”
“The police personnel –Assistant police officer Aye htun Sein and sergeant Than Maung Gyi- stationed near the clock tower and collecting toll from Rohingya who return from Maungdaw market.”

The authority also preparing to kept fake Rakhine refugees in the refugee centers in Maungdaw to show the difficulty of Rakhine community in Maungdaw. Actually, the Rohingya community is refugees as IDPs in their villages and not getting foods and medicines as they lost everything during the riot.
The UN Human Rights Special Rapporteur, Tomas Ojea Quintana wish to find out the real facts, he must meet the Rohingya from villages or must visit Rohingya villages if he had times to see the Rohingya life after riot in Maungdaw, said an elder from Maungdaw.
“The authority will give to meet him with some Rohingya who are the puppet of authority.”
“We have been receiving a stream of reports from independent sources alleging discriminatory and arbitrary responses by security forces, and even their instigation of and involvement in clashes,” the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, said in a news release stated in UN.org website.
“Reports indicate that the initial swift response of the authorities to the communal violence may have turned into a crackdown targeting Muslims, in particular members of the Rohingya [Muslim] community,” she added.
Ms. Pillay welcomed the Special Rapporteur’s visit, but noted that “while he will be able to make an initial assessment during his one-day visit, this is no substitute for a fully-fledged independent investigation.
Update News of July 27, 2012
Rathedaung
On July 25, at around 9:00 am, army accompanied by some local Rakhines forcibly relocated Upper Kyang Daung village of Rathedaung township. It has over 50 houses and the children and old people were facing very difficulties while the armies forcibly vacated them from their houses due to heavy rain, according to villagers.
However, the villagers are temporarily taking shelter in nearby three Rohingya villages– Sowarp Prang, Auk Nanra Gon (Raza Bill) and Pring Daung villages.
The army has established temporarily camp at Raza Bill village since July 25. Earlier, they stayed at Zedi Pyin Buddhist monastery. They are observing the situation of the village.
The relocated villagers are facing —shelter, food and medicine crisis– as they are not allowed to go market to buy rice and other essentials.
According to government officials, in Rathedaung Township, four refugee camps are established for Rakhine community. No refugees center for Rohingya in Rathedaung. All the Rakhine family members from the town are kept in the refugee camps to show the higher officials who will visit the Rathedaung Township. Their aims are to get rations from donors and to show international community by taking fake photos. Four Rohingya villages were burned down by police, Hluntin with the help of local Rakhines. Only Rakhine community attacked the Rohingya villages and publishing Rohingya attacked Rakhine community where the authority kept the Rakhine community in the refugee camps to show and to publish.
The state of emergency was declared in Rakhine state (Arakan State) by the union government on June 10 and the curfew was imposed by the state government on June 8, 2012.
“The situation is now backing to normal completely, said government official.” Why did the concerned authorities relocate Rohingya villages and arrest Rohingya villagers, so far?, said a villager.
Besides, Thara Pyin village of Rathedaung Township was burned down on June 21. It has 155 houses, of them 100 houses were burned down. Thami Hla was also burned down on June 14 by police, Hluntin and Army with the cooperation of some local Rakhines. There are also three other villages—Prin Daung, Kudo Chaung and Sao Pyin were burned down.
Maungdaw Township:
Md. Juhar (28), son of Fazalul Haque, hailed from Maung Ni village of Maungdaw Township was arrested by Burma’s border security force (Nasaka) at about 5:30 pm yesterday. After arrest, he was severely tortured and the villagers believe that he will die.
People are not allowed to buy rice so far in Maungdaw Township. So, the people are facing starvation in the holy month of Ramadan.
According to government official, it will stop the state sponsored emergency, when the situation is calm. In fact, there is no untoward incident, now, only the government harasses and arrests the Rohingya community without any provocation. They are culprits and the judge. Rakhine leaders and some of the officials ordered to the local Rakhines not to sell any rations to Rohingya Muslims. If anyone is found to be selling rice to Rohingyas, he/she will be punished.
Rakhine leaders and some of the officials ordered to the local Rakhines not to sell any rations to Rohingya Muslims. If anyone is found to be selling rice to Rohingyas, he/she will be punished.
During the last few days, government authorities have step up arresting many Rohingyas, including religious teachers and village leaders after inviting them to a meeting.
Five religious leaders who were arrested by Nasaka of Area No. 6 of Maungdaw Township on July 22, inviting them to a meeting were sent to Buthidaung Jail yesterday.
Besides, Mohamed Johar son of Muktar, acting village administration officer of Bagona village and its member Syed alam were arrested by Nasaka of Magyi Chaung on July 26 while attending meeting which was called by Nasaka. The arrestees persons’ information are not known till now the report filed.
Police office Than Htay and his collaborator, Syed Kaseim are harassing the villagers of Myothigyi everyday to extort money from villagers. The police officer asked money without any filing case, just said give money or will arrest.
Buthidaung Township:
In Buthidaung Jail, 31 prisoners died. Prisoners were severely tortured by concerned authorities of the jail. There are over 572 Rohingya prisoners, arrested from Maungdaw and Buthidaung townships recently. Most of them have been tortured, leaving without food and drink which leading to death. It is learnt that some of the prisoners have been living without clothes. Many Rohingyas were killed in jail and the dead bodies were not returned to their family members, according to a reliable source.
In every town, Rohingya people are not allowed to go out from their villages across the Arakan state. So, the people are dying daily as they are not able to buy any food. Rohingya People have been keeping in a big cage like birds since last June, and whenever the concerned authority wants to arrest them, they get out from the cage and torture and send to jail over false and fabricated allegations.
The government authorities are killing Rohingyas by cutting the rations. Today, Arakan State becomes silent killing field.
In Sittwe, people have been suffering from food crisis since the incident was occurred. Rohingyas are not allowed to buy food from the market. Children, old and wounded people have been suffering from food and medicine crisis most. The International Community must take action immediately to save Rohingya lives, said an elder from Akyab.
WE hope for the continuous support of the MEDIA and JOURNALIST to highlight our issues until there is peace in our state and we are Recognize as Citizen of Burma.

BURMA’S ROHINGYA ORIGIN IN THE ANCIENT KINGDOM OF ARAKAN: UNDERSTANDING THE ARAB – CHANDRA SYNTHESIS
Sunday, 29 July 2012 06:00
(A WORKING PAPER ON ARAKAN HISTORY)
Abid Bahar
Abstract (Several issues has come to the surface from the present research on DHANNAWADI and VASALI period of ancient Arakan;
(1) That DHANNAWADI and VASALI were Indian dynasties with Hindu and Mohayana Buddhist religious followers
(2) During the Chandra rule there had been some Arab settlements in Arakan. The language of the Chandras was proto-Chittagonian: Sanskrit, Pali, and Arabic mixed similar to what Buchanon Hamilton found in 1799 with Rohingyas in Burma, also that a similar language was spoken by the Chakmas and Thanchangras of Arakan and Bangladesh, its written form similar to Bengali found in the Ananda Chandra script
(3) Beginning from 957 A.D. there had been a huge migration of Tibeto-Burman Theraveda Buddhist population into the plains of Arakan, by defeating the Chandras they took possession of Arakan and the Indian look alike people retreated either toward the Northern part of Arakan or went back to Bengal, making the event its first Indian exodus of Arakaniese people to Bengal.
(4) In our contemporary period there has been a conscious effort among Arakan’s Rakhine crudader like historians to deny and cleanse from history, not only the traces of Indian Hindu or Mohayana civilization but also the traces of Muslim population and their Arab-Chandra synthesis of the Chandras predating the Tibeto Burman Theraveda Buddhist existence. )

Rohingya – Menyayat Hati…
“Barangsiapa yang tidak mengambil peduli umat Islam yang lain, dia bukan dari golonganku” [H.R At-Tabrani]
Kirimkan doamu teman…kita mengadu pd Allah yg Maha Kuasa…
Wallahu a’lam…”
Terima kasih kerana membaca.. I think u know what should we do as Muslim..

Bangladesh’s prime minister has told Al Jazeera that muslim refugees fleeing violence in Myanmar are not her country’s responsibility. Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh is already overpopulated and there’s no more room.

Five Reasons No One Cares About the Rohingya
11 Comments Tags: Asia · Burma · human rights · humanitarian crisis · Islam · Muslim · Myanmar
If you paid especially close attention to the news these past few weeks, you might have caught some fleeting mention of the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar.
Considering how little the American media, and to only a slightly lesser extent their international counterparts, have covered this latest outbreak of violence between Buddhist nationalists and minority Rohingya Muslims, you are squarely in the majority if you have no idea that dozens have been butchered and hundreds have attempted (unsuccessfully) to flee their homeland.
All while the world remains silent.
It wasn’t supposed to be this way. The days of mass expulsion and unchecked, government backed aggression was assumed to be a relic of a bygone era. With citizen journalism filling the few gaps overlooked by a 24-hour news cycle, how has the plight of the Rohingya Muslims been largely ignored?
1) Location, Location, Location
For better or worse, the Middle East is an area of the world that garners, even during “normal” times, plenty of coverage and commentary. When extraordinary events occur in the region, they innately draw the world’s eyes and ears – and news cameras. The same can hardly be said for Southeast Asia. Even with China’s ascendancy on the world stage, Americans simply don’t care about Asia. In fact, the vast majority of Americans probably couldn’t spot Myanmar on a map, given the trouble they have even pointing out nations they’re at war with.
What’s more, we can’t even decide what to call the country. Among the few news reports that have acknowledged the crisis, “Burma” and “Myanmar” were used interchangeably. Given all the media items vying for our scarce time, this added bit of confusion likely undercut whatever traction the story might have otherwise had.
2) No Rohingya Mona Eltahawy
As the ongoing – though, hopefully, close to concluding – crisis in Syria evidences, social media cannot in itself solve all the world’s ills. Facebook is not in the business of feeding the hungry and Twitter does not topple dictators. In an age of ever decreasing attention spans, however, these tools expand a story’s global mindshare. The more people “like” and “retweet” news of a tragedy, the higher the chances that something will be done about it.
In the case of the Rohingya, there hasn’t been anything near the critical mass that the Arab Spring garnered. Part of the reason, as mentioned, is a general dearth of interest in this part of the globe. Just as important, perhaps, is the lack of a Rohingya representative, a Western media darling that, like Mona Eltahawy did with Egypt, presents the crisis in terms that an American audience can understand and sympathize with. In essence, if your not seeing it in your Facebook newsfeed or Twitter stream, don’t expect to see it on your nightly news.
3) No Land to Call Their Own
One’s mobility, identity and, more importantly, access to rights is fundamentally linked to their national affiliation. As there is hardly a patch of land or water on the globe not claimed by some sovereign nation, the notion of a landless people seems like it should be an anachronism in the modern world. If only that was the case.
The issue of statelessness is all too familiar to Muslims who have for generations witnessed the suffering of Palestinians under Israeli occupation. Yet, in some ways, the Rohingya do not even enjoy the modicum of civil rights afforded to the Palestinians. Since the approximately 800,000 Rohingya living in Myanmar are denied citizenship status by the military government, their land is routinely confiscated, their children are denied any education beyond what they internally receive within the community, adults are denied the opportunity to look for work outside their village, and they can’t even marry without getting authorization to do so. As David Camroux, a top commentator on Islam in Asia, succinctly put it: “The Rohingya are the Roma of Asia, nobody respects their human rights.”
4) Getting in the way of “Democracy”
Oftentimes – though, certainly, not always – the West will rally to the aid of oppressed peoples if their oppressor fits the “bad guy” mold. The interventions in Rwanda, Bosnia and Somalia, for example, allowed Western powers to construct a narrative of “good” versus “evil.” When the roles are not so neat, when, for instance, the oppressor is a “necessary evil,” then NATO, the UN, et al. get far more gun shy – witness the past half century of Middle East policy. Just imagine the inertia, then, when the “bad guy” is being billed as the “good guy.”
Prior to this recent outbreak of violence, Myanmar was drawing positive headlines for its “democratic transition.” Over the past year, President Thein Sein has made strides towards greater openness and representation in his country, garnering praise from the international community and audiences with top dignitaries from America and Europe. Within this new democratic paradigm, however, it seems there’s no room for the Rohingya.
Top officials and activists in Myanmar have either tacitly or explicitly – more often, the later – shown their disdain for the Rohingya. No less a figure than the president himself openly said the Rohingya are not welcome in his country. Following this declaration, exiled Burmese democracy activists in Japan voiced their support of the president’s stance. Perhaps most appalling, however, is the cowardly silence of Myanmar’s celebrated Nobel Peace laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, as her country continues its policy of ethnic cleansing.
5) Follow the Money
Shockingly, the world’s economic superpowers don’t appear to be supportive of Myanmar’s “democratic transition” out of reverence for the ideals of freedom and liberty. They would likely be much less enthusiastic about the country’s newfound openness if it wasn’t for the its vast, largely untapped natural resources. Multi-national and sovereign backed corporations are jockeying left and right for a piece of what could be the next big growth story in Asia (the Economist Intelligence Unit estimates an 85% chance for growth to rise 75-100% in the next eight years).
With such heady prospects, it is no surprise that Hilary Clinton’s recent visit with Thein Sein, which came two days after the US eased sanctions on Myanmar, was centered on business and long-term investment opportunities rather than ongoing human rights abuses. To be fair, Clinton did bring up the plight of the Rohingya, calling them “internally displaced persons” in an affront to President Sein’s call for the UN to resettle the Rohingya outside Myanmar’s borders, but the issue was dropped just as quickly at it was raised. We can’t have a few thousand ill-treated Asians get in the way of Corporate America’s potential windfall, after all.

It has been a few weeks now since the violence in Myanmar reached its peak. Nonetheless, Amnesty International reports that Rohingya Muslims continue to be targeted by the majority Buddhist population in the region. The Rohingya’s status is becoming much more precarious with each passing day. How to resolve this matter is debatable, but the first step is for the global community to acknowledge there is a problem. What we certainly cannot do is sit idly by and expect the Burmese government to handle this matter “internally.” If you think that such acquiescence would bring about anything short of genocide, you simply haven’t been paying attention.
Sadly, you’re not alone.

Hi Restless Beings
For the past couple of months we’ve been at the height of activity with our Rohingya campaign following recent clashes between the Muslim Rohingya and the Rakhine Buddhists of Burma. Soon after the outbreak of violence in the Arakan state we held a protest outside the Bangladesh embassy lobbying for the opening of its borders to temporarily accommodate refugees fleeing the region. We went on to urge diplomatic action from the British Government armed with a petition signed by over 13,000 people from 134 countries worldwide. We’ve had over 90,000 hits on the RestlessBeings website in the past few weeks as a result of our collective presence on social networks. Throughout the conflict access into Burma has been severely restricted with Amnesty International and Oxfam being refused entry. We’re in the process of forming a stronghold of charity coalitions to urge and facilitate delivery of food and medical aid to those affected. |
Despite restricted access, our network of sources has acquired exclusive footage and images from the ground depicting the mass expulsion of Rohingya and witness statements describing violent attacks. RestlessBeings collated this footage in a short film called Burma’s Rohingya: The Human Story which was presented during a press conference in London on the 23rd of July. And so to London 2012 – the city will be heaving with athletes, media and spectators alike and to coincide with the first Burmese athlete entry we will be holding a peaceful, colourful and fun demonstration to raise awareness of Rohingya on Saturday 28th July. Date: Saturday 28th July 2012 What should you wear? What will you need? |
We are shocked that with such widescale and xenophobic statements by the president of Burma in relation to the Rohingya, that the country is still able to compete at the games. The Olympics represent an opportunity for all races and nationalities to come together under the umbrella of sports. South Africa was banned from competing in international sports during the apartheid period – why shouldn’t Burma? We will continue to appeal to influential members of the Burmese and Bangladeshi communities to support the campaign, but also need to maintain the presence of the Rohingya crisis on social media. We must urge international pressure on Burmese authorities to allow the access of both aid and media into the region, the Rohingya can not go unseen and unheard. |
